What is an X-Ray?

X-ray may be the oldest form of medical imaging, but it’s also the most frequently used. It’s like taking a picture of the inside of your body-an exercise that’s tried and true. Our X-ray facilities utilize digital equipment to quickly provide the clearest images possible, helping our radiologists detect the presence or absence of disease, foreign objects and structural damage or anomaly. From the most basic to the most highly sophisticated examinations, we are well equipped from both equipment and staffing perspectives.

Imaging with X-ray involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce interior pictures of the part of your body that is in question.

How do I prepare?

There is no preparation for an X-ray, although patients may be asked to change into a gown to eliminate any interference from metal objects on your clothing.  We may ask you to remove jewelry, hairpins, glasses, hearing aides, and dentures.

What will I experience during my examination?

Depending on your specific examination, our staff will position you on an examination table or stand you against a wall mounted positioning table called an “upright bucky.”

Depending on the body part that is being imaged, two or three X-rays are taken. During the examination, you will be asked to remain as still as possible, as any movement can blur the exposure. For some examinations, you will be required to hold your breath for very short periods to prevent any motion. Rest assured, X-rays are painless and the examination is quick.
